The Dewey system for identifying books uses decimals because in theory the number of books can be infinite. In a 10-based numbering system, the ten categories branch into 10 categories which can then be ten categories each and so on.
Books on the shelf are identified with a call number and first two letters of the author's last name. Finding information IN a book (as to whether that book has what I need) is found in the Table of Contents at the front of the book and specific words can be found in the index at the back of the book.
Books, Book of Days....is all about finding information!
