Day 9: APA vs. MLA

The two most common strategies for citing written information are Modern Language Association format and American Psychological Association format.

MLA emphasizes the author of a work and is generally used in the humanities when authorship matters more than when it was written. For example, William Shakespeare wrote Romeo & Juliet...that information will not change over time. An author's review of the play will not change over time.

APA emphasizes the date a work was created and is generally used in the sciences where researchers build on each other's work. Knowing the age of the previous research sets the stage for legitimacy. For example, an astrophysicist would not want to base research on star information from 200 years ago before many stars were not known...even 10 years ago may be too old for research purposes. Researchers wants the most current information possible.
