Interest in a Book of Days or Journals

When do people generally show interest in a book of days, or journals? I suspected people like to start a journal or diary or a book of days as a fresh start, perhaps at the beginning of a new year. Using Google Trends, I do indeed see peaks during Decembers and Januarys of the last years. This would indicate that, of the internet users who accessed information through Google, the fresh start theory may be accurate although moreso in 2005 than now. What was happening in 2005 that inspired interest in journaling, and book of days? Was there a famous diary published at that time?  Was there a upsurge in self-reflection?
