Gourd Blog of Days

Because I do gourd art and am surrounding by the history and fascination of gourds, I am struck by the beauty of going a gourd book.

This seems to be a small kettle gourd.
OR perhaps a elongated egg gourd.
In these examples of 'books', there are many 'pages' of information linked together with a string so all the pages can be nested inside a gourd. What would add to the book would be to decorate the outside to display the title and perhaps a list of chapters (packets of lessons). This could be done by spiraling the 'cover' text on the outside of the gourd to mimic the interior circles of text.

Each paper disk is linked together and which can then
be nested inside a gourd. The Center for Book Arts is
a fabulous resource for books.
This example seems to be a canteen gourd.

The American Gourd Society has a chart of gourds that can lead a person to knowing what kind of gourd these images are showing. Since I have canteen gourds in the garage, I would use those. Being flat-ish, a canteen gourd, like the one below from Pumpkin Hollow Gourds, would lend itself to nesting a pile of lessons on top of each other within. After cutting it horizontally, it would provide a level, broad open area. It would be interesting to see if the string linking component could be a spring so the canteen book lessons wouldn't flop, but be more controlled. At the very least, the lid (cover) of the book needs to be notched so it remains clear where the front and back meet. Another way would be to use a hinge, so the lid would turn open instead of moving off as a lid to a pot is removed.

At first I was thinking the higher the line the deeper the bowl part and therefore the more lessons that could be piled inside, but then I remembered the string -- the connector for all the packets of lessons. I want the packets of lessons to be connected to the gourd because it is a book of research days, not just a gourd full of paper circles.
